As thin as butter, crazier than a nutter

Burning a candle at both ends, the obsessive endeavour to always be doing, studying, working, socializing, progressing somehow, can take a toll on a person and a leave a waxy mess on one’s floor. There is also a chance the candle lacks much luminosity from the get-go, leaving us relatively in the dark. By this I mean, perhaps we have a thin flat candle, more like a pancake with many wicks. More of a crêpe…

“You can be a renaissance man, just don’t spread yourself too thin” — ‘Suh Dude

The wise words of my coworker, ‘Suh Dude, helping me stay the path without straying too far from the center. He had a good point, what if the candle is too thin in the first place? What’s a candle if there’s only a wick?

It’s one thing to always be trying to do something, and another to be doing too many things. One thing seems certain: persistence is key. So, if you take a million days on one activity, you’ll be amazing at it (well, the potential is there). If you take one day on a million activities, which of these activities will you really be proud to share? In which activities will you gain the capacity to express yourself, to share with others something to make their day or their life easier, something that can invoke some sort of awe in a person, as much as a beautiful sunrise or sunset?

For me, it was hard to narrow down what I wanted to do, fairly similar to when it would be my time to choose a “cabin cereal” (my brother and I were only allowed to have sugary cereals when we went on vacation to our family cabin, and just one box). It has always been that way. An indecisive person, and at 22, I’m seeing how indecision has been not a force driving my boat towards golden shores, rather a ravenous wind looking to eat everyone on board my ship, throwing them off deck and into the pits of the oceans stomach.

So, find a few things you truly enjoy and do them with your heart. Let time dissolve like the mist as the day progresses and the sun fills its space with warmth. For me lately, drawing/painting, reading, writing, biking, and taking videos have been my rays of sun, allowing me to bask in their warmth.
